2nd Grade Homework Policy
Reading/Book Baggies
The main homework is nightly reading of at least 20 minutes. These 20 minutes should be designated for your at-level BOOK BAGGY books. Like the "boomerang" folder, the Book Baggies also go home every night and come back to school every day. Please keep track of reading done at home on the READING LOG that is kept in your Book Baggy. In addition to this, you may record the time spent reading books of your choice, time being read to, or online reading activities to the reading log.
We sent home the Book Baggies today! Now that we’re 2nd graders, we are more grown-up readers! As grown-up readers we make reading goals to make our reading stronger. Your child wrote a reading goal for this period. Please have conversations at home that reflect on your child’s reading goals and create new ones when one side of his/her reading log is completed.
Additional Homework
Reading for 20 minutes outside of school is your main focus at home. We will not be sending home nightly homework or a formal homework packet. The other on-going homework is spending at least a half hour on the online programs Dreambox (math) and Raz-Kids (reading) per week. As teachers, we can track student progress on these adaptive programs that help boost student achievement. Your child’s accounts should be ready to go, although we will be introducing it as a class next week. If you were at QAE last year, they will continue from where your child was last year and you probably already know how to log on. You can access these programs by going to the QAE website, go to the LIBRARY tab, then RESOURCES, then go to MATH (for Dreambox) or READING for Raz-Kids. We will also put a link from our classroom website under HOMEWORK.
Periodically we will be sending home math sheets, enrichment work, or recommend Brain Pop Jr. episodes and quizzes to complete that focus on what we’re learning at school. This bonus work that is completed and returned to school will be recognized in class.
