What a hot, busy, and fun week! Chances are your child is pretty exhausted this week. It takes a lot out of their little bodies to get back into the school routine. Until we get adjusted, they made need a little extra TLC, I know I do!
We are continuing to establish our school routines and strengthening our class community. I hope you take time to look through the pictures we post each week as they will shed some light on what we’re doing at school. I try to write a minimal amount and let the pictures do the talking. The pictures can also lead to great talking points and get your child to share more about what they did at school on a given day.
A few key things:
- Book Baggies: Everyday your child should bring home his/her book baggie and return back to school everyday. Baggies will have “just-right” books that your child should spend about 20 minutes a night reading. They may choose any other book to read from after reading their “just-right” book.
- Reading Logs: There will be a new reading log going home every Monday and will be due every Monday. 2nd graders should be reading about 100 minutes a week and keep record of this time on the reading log. I strongly encourage you to be a partner in this organizational piece and for your child to record, keep track of time, and add the minutes he/she reads.
- Homework: Nightly reading is the required homework. Raz-Kids and Dreambox are great programs to enrich reading and math skills. I strongly encourage time spent on both these programs, at least 30 minutes a week. Occasionally I will send home work that may be supplemental to what we’re doing in class or needs to be completed for special events. You can look out for blogs posts that will have optional home components.
- Wish list: I am trying to get our classroom functional and cozy and am on the hunt for a few things: I’m looking for extra area rugs (for a softer floor work space in the classroom and hallway), a seamstress to make colorful pillow cases for our otherwise drab pillows, and some indoor plants to help us all breathe a little easier! If you can contribute any of these these, thanks in advance! Thank you to Erin Krawiec for purchasing some books and a floor chair for our classroom on our Amazon wish list.
See you Monday!
